Congratulations Shaul Magid

The Jewish Studies Program Steering is delighted to announce that  Professor Shaul Magid will have a distinguished fellow appointment with the Jewish Studies Program.  It is a tremendous achievement for us and for Dartmouth to have Shaul, a scholar of international renown and enormous productivity.

Shaul comes to Dartmouth from Indiana University's large and prominent Jewish Studies Program, where he has held the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Professorship in Jewish Studies since 2004. He completed his MA at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and his doctoral work on Hasidism at Brandeis University, where his advisors included Marvin Fox, Elliot Wolfson, and Antony Polonsky. Since then, he has published several books on Hasidic thought, including Hasidism on the Margin, Hasidim Incarnate: Hasidism Christianity and the Making of Modern Judaism and Piety and Rebellion, just published. His book The Bible, The Talmud and the New Testament: Elijah Soloveitchik's Commentary to the Gospel will appear in June. He has also published books on Lurianic mysticism, From Metaphysics to Midrash and on contemporary American Judaism, American Post-Judaism. He is currently completing a book on Meir Kahane entitled, Meir Kahane: The Rise and Fall of an American Jewish Survivalist, and a book on the Satmar branch of Hasidism, A Jewish Political Theology of the Anti-Christ: Joel Teitelbaium of Satmar and his Battle Against Zionism. His 2008 book, From Metaphysics to Midrash: Myth, History, and the Interpretation of Scripture in Lurianic Kabbala, won the American Academy of Religion Book Award for Excellence in Religion in the Textual Studies Category.

The range of Shaul's teaching is impressive, and it is wonderful to have him on campus and enthusiastic about teaching our students.
